Introduction
What kind of manager do you want to be? One who will be remembered? One who is said to have positively influenced and inspired your employees? One who is still talked about positively years later?
We show you what good managers do differently:
1. own further development
The best managers are those who stay on the ball. They constantly question themselves and continue to develop. "You snooze, you lose" also applies here. Don't stop learning - not even from your own mistakes. Strive for new ideas and improvements and stay up to date professionally.
2. loyalty
Show loyalty and - depending on the situation - stand behind, in front of and also beside your team! Employees appreciate managers with backbone who stand by their word and make decisions - even if they are sometimes unpleasant!
But of course loyalty to the company is also important! Do you identify with your company and its products?
3. be a role model and show enthusiasm
Do you expect punctuality from your team and are often late yourself? Do you expect motivation and are grumpy yourself? Yes, it's like your own children - they reflect you every day. Set an example of what you expect from your team. Many leadership issues will take care of themselves!
Show enthusiasm for your product or your activities, because if you are not enthusiastic - how can your employees be?
4. challenge and encourage
Challenge your employees. Set challenging but achievable goals that motivate them!
And support your team! Do you know the strengths and weaknesses of your employees? Do you regularly carry out potential analyses to determine which skills your employees still need? No? Then we advise you to start as soon as possible!
Not all - but many employees want to develop further and are looking for prospects! With further development, training and exciting projects, you not only motivate your team, you also advance your company and drive innovation!
5. feedback
Get regular feedback from your employees. Nothing is more valuable than employees who trust you and give you honest and constructive feedback! You often have blind spots yourself and don't recognize some patterns of behaviour. It's worth its weight in gold when your team or colleagues open your eyes!
But also give regular feedback. Once a year at the performance review is definitely not enough! Constructive feedback is often the best way to grow. This motivates, encourages and shows your employees new ways forward!
6. technical know-how
You definitely don't have to be a professional in every area, but a certain amount of technical know-how is extremely important! Accompany your employees to their appointments from time to time to see what they are doing and how they are working. Show an interest in your employees' projects and work on the front line from time to time - this will open your eyes and broaden your horizons!
7. be a philanthropist
Good managers are those who show appreciation for other people! A healthy understanding of people, attentive listening, open body language, strong communication skills, empathy and the ability to put themselves in other people's shoes. Every employee is different and therefore needs to be managed differently. You can only do this if you also know the personality of your employees.
Find the right balance between authority and approachability! And don't forget to have fun with your team from time to time!
8. tough but heartfelt
As is so often the case - it's all in the mix! Establish clear rules for the most important areas, because if everyone can do what they want, the ship will soon sink. Develop a culture of error, make transparent decisions, set a vision and clear goals, see your employees as your most important asset and create a pleasant working environment in which you yourself enjoy coming to work.
Of course, there is no "jack of all trades" for managers either. You can't be equally good in all areas, but keep reminding yourself why you like being a manager so much and make your life easier by implementing some of our tips 🙂
And if you ever need help - we will be happy to support you!
