Introduction

Do you want to become a manager and don't know what steps you need to take and what skills today's managers need?

How about teamwork, communication and social skills - don't worry , we won't bore you with this bullshit bingo!

We have interviewed managers from different areas and together with our experience we will give you the really important tips!

1. why?

The first question you should ask yourself is "why"? Why do you want to become a manager in the first place? If the answer is: more money, a nice company car, more power and because it looks good on the business card - then you are wrong for this job!

The really good managers need completely different "whys": accompanying employees on their personal development journey, realizing new ideas and achieving goals together as a team, the development of the company through the commitment of their own team, more creative freedom, representing their own area to the outside world - these are just a few examples!

2. sense and values

What is the meaning of life? Probably a different one for everyone!

If you see little or no meaning in what you do, you will lose motivation very quickly. Therefore, one of the most important questions is probably what exactly this meaning looks like for you personally, but also for your team.

Generation Y in particular is said to attach great importance to the meaning of work. But who likes doing meaningless work? Show your employees the meaning of their work and give them responsibility. Lead with goals, let your team manage certain processes themselves and work out the purpose and values of your employees in workshops. You will be amazed at how different this can be and that you will have to manage each employee differently as a result.

3. reflection

You want to become a manager, but do you have what it takes? Do you want to swap places with your line manager and deal with similar pressure and demands? Reflect on yourself regularly and get feedback on your charisma, your skills and your personality. Honest feedback is worth its weight in gold! Ask your partner, manager, HR department and friends what skills you still lack as a manager and what you are already very good at. This takes courage - but you need that as a manager anyway - so you can practise it right at the start.

4. training

If possible, don't let yourself be thrown in at the deep end, but look for training - ideally before you take on a management role. Use this "protected" space for your further development, your questions and your fears.

Getting the right tools for the job and leadership tools is the ticket to a successful management career!

5. mentor

When we asked our selected managers - What would have helped you at the beginning? - the answer was almost always "a mentor".

Look for a mentor. If it is not possible within the company, then outside, among friends or possibly through recommendations.

And because this topic has stuck with us and we would like to support young managers, we have set up the "Führungskräftezone" group on Facebook. You are cordially invited to join to find mentors and get tips and tricks from experienced managers.

Long-standing managers are often happy when they can pass on their knowledge and experience. You have a sparring partner for problems or difficult topics and can ask for advice if you get stuck - you will often be grateful for this!

6. presence

Yes, you need to be present in the company and stand out positively. If nobody knows that you want to become a manager, it will probably be difficult. Talk to your manager and HR department about your goals and don't be disappointed if it's not possible straight away. Companies can't create management positions "out of thin air" either.

Show commitment and ambition, go the extra mile, contribute ideas and constantly develop yourself further.

7. expectations

What expectations does the company or your manager have of you? Can you meet these expectations? Do you have similar expectations? If not, you can still turn things around and start your management career later. Some people may have to be thrown in at the deep end - but trust your gut feeling!
